Free Grief Support in May 2026: Carolina Caring Programs Across Western NC

Woman finding mental health support and emotional healing in Concord NC area
Carolina Caring's May 2026 grief programs offer in-person support, conversation, and creative healing.

Grief does not keep a calendar, and most people walking through it discover that the world moves on long before the weight does. Carolina Caring's Center for Grief and Healing is opening up six in-person grief support gatherings throughout May 2026 across western and central North Carolina. The programs are free, open to anyone experiencing grief, and designed to meet people where they are — over coffee, around a craft table, or in conversation with others who understand. Solo Faith Church wants our Concord and Cabarrus County neighbors to know that real, professional grief support is within driving distance and costs nothing to attend.

Key Points to Know

  • Good Mourning Coffee meets monthly at Panera Bread, 2250 US Hwy 70 SE, Hickory, NC — Wednesday, May 13 and Wednesday, June 10, 9:00am to 10:00am.

  • Remade With Love is a creative grief group with four locations: Carolina Caring Office in Gastonia (May 11), The Tilted Map in Morganton (May 18), Carolina Caring Newton (May 19), and Carolina Caring Huntersville Clinic (May 26).

  • All sessions are free of charge and open to anyone experiencing grief — no diagnosis, paperwork, or membership required.

  • Each location has its own RSVP deadline (one week before the event); spaces are limited so early registration is recommended.

  • To register, call 828.466.0466 ext. 3201, visit carolinacaring.org/support/, or email wspurling@carolinacaring.org.

Why These Programs Look So Different

Grief expert Charles A. Corr, PhD writes in Carolina Caring's May/June 2026 newsletter that "there are two possible meanings to 'getting through grief'" — short-term coping and long-term restructuring of life around the loss. Carolina Caring designed programs at different times of day, in different settings, with different formats so that grievers can find a space that fits where they are in the process. Coffee at Panera meets one need. A creative group at The Tilted Map meets another. The point is to never make a grieving person feel like they have to fit a one-size-fits-all program.

Statistics That Show the Need

Bereavement is one of the most under-supported life events in the United States. The American Psychological Association reports that roughly 2.5 million Americans die each year, leaving an estimated five surviving close family members per death — meaning more than 12 million people enter active grief annually. Research summarized by the National Institutes of Health finds that about 7 to 10 percent of bereaved adults develop prolonged grief disorder, a condition associated with elevated risk for depression, sleep disturbance, cardiovascular illness, and suicidal ideation. Free, accessible programs like Carolina Caring's reduce that risk by getting people into peer and professional support early.
