Inside Solo Faith's Free Online Course on the Ancient Near East

Most people in Concord have never had a seminary classroom within reach. Solo Faith Church set out to change that — not with tuition or an admissions office, but with a free, self-paced online course anyone can open from a phone or a laptop. It is called Origins of Ancient Civilizations: The Ancient Near East, and it walks a curious reader from the first cities of Sumer all the way to the empires of Persia, with every lesson tied back to Scripture.

What This Course Actually Is

The course grew out of a simple conviction at Solo Faith Church: that serious Bible study and serious history belong together, and that neither should sit behind a paywall. Across five modules and twelve lessons, it traces humanity's first civilizations — the earliest cradles of settlement, the kings and scribes of Mesopotamia, Hammurabi's Babylon, the pyramid builders and pharaohs of Egypt, the collapse of the Bronze Age world, and the Iron Age empires of Assyria and Persia alongside the rise of biblical monotheism.

What sets it apart from a dry textbook is the voice. Every lesson is written in plain, story-driven language — the kind you would want from a patient teacher rather than a lecturer. Each one pairs with a short quiz to help the material stick, and each closes with a faith connection that ties the ancient world back to the pages of the Bible. The whole course is self-paced. The platform lists the workload at roughly 24 days of unhurried study, but there is no clock and no deadline — a working parent, a college student, or a retiree can move through it on their own schedule.

What the Five Modules Cover

  • Origins — the first cities and the cradles of human settlement

  • Mesopotamia — the kings, scribes, and law of Hammurabi's Babylon

  • Ancient Egypt — the pyramid builders and the pharaohs

  • The Bronze Age World — its peoples and its dramatic collapse

  • Iron Age Empires and the Birth of Monotheism — Assyria, Persia, and the rise of biblical faith

Why a Free Course Like This Matters in Cabarrus County

For anyone who has ever wanted to go deeper than a Sunday-morning overview — to understand the world Abraham walked out of, the empires that carried Israel into exile, the daily life behind the names in Genesis and Kings — this is a rare on-ramp. Formal seminary and university courses on the Ancient Near East often cost hundreds or thousands of dollars. Solo Faith's course asks for nothing. It is offered as a community education ministry, open to church members, students, and neighbors with no church background at all.

That accessibility is the whole point. A free, digital Bible-history course means the person who cannot drive to a campus, cannot afford tuition, or simply studies best at the kitchen table at ten at night still gets a real, structured education in the world of the Bible.

How to Enroll

Enrolling takes about a minute. Visit the Origins of Ancient Civilizations course on the Solo Faith Church site and select Join, or take it through the Solo Faith Church mobile app, which keeps your place between lessons. There is no payment screen and no application. You can learn more about the congregation behind it at Solo Faith Church.

Questions Neighbors Are Asking

Is the course really free?

Yes. There is no tuition, no fee, and no payment screen. It is offered as part of Solo Faith Church's community education ministry.

Do I need to be a church member or a Christian to take it?

No. The course is open to everyone — church members, students, and neighbors who are simply curious about the ancient world. The faith connections are there for those who want them, but the history stands on its own.

How long does it take to finish?

It is fully self-paced. The platform estimates about 24 days of light study across the 12 lessons, but you set the pace and there is no deadline.

What will I understand by the end?

You will have a working map of the Ancient Near East — from Sumer's first cities to the empires of Assyria and Persia — and a clearer sense of the historical world in which the Bible was written.

Solo Faith Church shares this because learning the Bible's world should never depend on a tuition check or a seminary zip code. Free, serious education is one of the most lasting gifts a congregation can hand its neighbors, so we built it and opened the door to all of Concord.
