Favor Underground Part 3: Joseph's Coat Was Never the Favor

Favor Underground Part 3: Joseph's Coat Was Never the Favor

Joseph's coat came off twice in the book of Genesis, and neither time did his favor go with it. On Sunday, October 18, Pastor Doug Lattimore brought Solo Faith Church back to Genesis 37 and then two chapters over to Genesis 39 for Favor Underground Part 3, the third message in a series about the favor God keeps hidden until the right season.

The series has already grown past the pulpit. Pastor Doug opened by telling the room, and everyone on the livestream and the podcast, that these sermons are now a book. Favor Underground is on Amazon for Kindle and Kindle Unlimited, in paperback and hardcover, and he encouraged listeners to try the audiobook on Audible.

If you missed the earlier messages, Favor Underground Part 1 laid the foundation in Psalm 90:17, and Joseph in the pit, Part 2 followed Joseph into the pit his brothers dug. Part 3 picks up at the edge of that pit.

Joseph's Coat Was the Sign, Not the Favor

Genesis 37:23 says that when Joseph reached his brothers, they stripped him of his coat of many colors. Pastor Doug slowed down on that detail. Jacob had given Joseph the coat, and it showed the whole family which son he favored. But the coat only displayed the favor. It was never the favor itself.

You taking away my coat doesn't mean you've taken away my favor.

He pointed to how the scene plays out. Joseph sits underground in a pit while the brothers who put him there sit down to eat, comfortable with what they have done. Nobody at that meal can see that the one in the pit is the one carrying God's favor. That, Pastor Doug said, is what underground means: hidden. The brothers can't see it, Jacob can't see it, and sometimes the person in the pit can't see it either. Romans 8:28 still stands, he reminded the room. All things work together for good, not some things.

Reuben is the reason Joseph was alive down there. The other brothers wanted to kill him and then throw him in; Reuben talked them into putting him in the pit alive, intending to bring him home to their father. Pastor Doug called Reuben Joseph's secret supporter, a reminder that when people are tearing you down, not everyone believes what they hear. He also admitted that some people in his own life would have kept their distance hidden if they had not shown it so plainly, and that their betrayal ended up protecting him.

Functionally Illogical

Pastor Doug gave the brothers a name the congregation repeated back: functionally illogical. They could work, go to school and look fine from the outside, but Joseph's favor made them unreasonable. They were angry over a dream and angry that their father loved him. The same thing happens now, he said, when someone resents your paycheck, your marriage or your relationship with your parents, and no explanation will satisfy them.

His counsel was not to feed it. People who resent your favor are often waiting for a reaction they can use: a harsh word, a fight, a post they can quote back. Hand them that and you give them the ammunition to attack your influence. Don't give them what they want, he said.

Genesis 39: The Second Coat

Then he turned the congregation to Genesis 39:11-12. By this point Joseph had been sold into slavery and bought by Potiphar, whose household prospered under Joseph's management. Potiphar's wife pursued him day after day. On the day she made sure no other men were in the house, she caught him by his garment, and Joseph left it in her hand, fled and got out.

Pastor Doug lingered on those last words. There are times when God gets you out of a situation, he said, and there are times when you have to get yourself out. Joseph did not stay to argue or explain. He left, even though it cost him another coat.

Light and Darkness, Not Blood and Water

So why did Joseph keep losing coats? Pastor Doug's answer was light. When someone flips on the lights in a dark bedroom, the first response is to squint and say turn it off. A person walking in God's favor can have that effect on people who have grown used to negativity, and they push back on the light instead of adjusting to it. He tied it to John 1:5: the light shines in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not.

That is why being family does not guarantee being received, he said. Joseph's brothers were his blood, and they still could not take his light. When a relationship at home or at work keeps breaking down no matter how hard you work at it, it may be a question of light and darkness, not blood and water.

From the Pit to Pharaoh's House

Pastor Doug traced Joseph through places that could not hold him. His brothers stripped the first coat because they believed the favor belonged to Reuben, the firstborn. Potiphar's wife took the second, as if to say she could hand out a coat and take it back. In prison nobody gets a coat at all, and few people expect much from those inside. He noted that Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr. both had a great deal to offer the world from behind bars.

Then Joseph reached Pharaoh's house, and everything changed. Pharaoh saw the wisdom of God on him, not only to interpret a dream but to build a plan around it. Joseph did not have to ask for a coat or earn anyone's respect. In the right place, his light needed no explanation.

Some of you might find pits before you find palaces.

He asked the congregation to stop attaching their emotions to places that refuse their light, and to keep one eye open for the place where they are received as they are. In his closing prayer he asked for strength for anyone, in the room or online, who keeps over-explaining themselves to people who will not hear it, and for the peace Jesus promised in John 14:27.

Before the benediction he added one more turn of the story. Joseph's brothers eventually came to Egypt looking for bread and found the favor they had thrown into a pit. Some people won't see who you have become in this season, he said, but God can reveal you to them later. Turn the page and read the next chapter.

If this message found you in a pit or a prison season, you can send a prayer request to the Solo Faith team, or listen on the Solo Faith podcast and hear the whole series on your drive.

Solo Faith Church shares this message because many of the neighbors we serve, at the pantry, on DoorDash deliveries and in the online lobby, are living through seasons where everything that once marked them seems to have been stripped away. We believe what Joseph learned is still true in Concord: what people take from you was never what God put in you.
