Food Delivery for Seniors, Veterans, and the Neighbors a Pantry Cannot Reach

A food pantry only works if you can get to it. For a meaningful number of households in Concord, that sentence is the entire problem. The food exists, the pantry is open, and the distance in between might as well be a wall. Solo Faith Church's answer is free food delivery for seniors, veterans, and families without a ride.

The Barrier Nobody Budgets For

Transportation is rarely the line item anyone plans around when they set up a food program. Shelves get stocked. Hours get posted. Volunteers get scheduled. Then someone calls and explains that she has not been able to leave her apartment in three weeks, and the design has a hole in it that no amount of donated food will fill.

Pastor Douglas Lattimore started the delivery program last year after concluding that access, not supply, was the harder problem.

Pastor's Notes: "You wouldn't imagine how many people there are living in hotels and motels with no transportation, and they live by a highway with no access to a bus line, some of whom are disabled physically and mentally. We are here for them."

Who It Reaches

Solo Faith Church's delivery program was built with three groups of Cabarrus County neighbors specifically in mind:

• Seniors, for whom a two-mile trip can be genuinely out of reach on a given week

• Veterans, including those managing mobility limits that make a pantry visit hard to plan around

• Families without dependable transportation, where a car may exist but does not always start, or is shared across three working adults

What the Church Did About It

Pastor Douglas Lattimore started the program last year and routed the deliveries through DoorDash drivers. Volunteers pack boxes at the church, drivers collect them, and the groceries arrive at the door. Around 160 households receive them each month, and none of those households has to wait in a line.

Love your neighbor as yourself, and that's kind of our thing. And so, we got the opportunity to do that with food, then we wanted to make it as accessible as possible.

Accessible is the operative word. This is not a pantry that added a delivery option at the edges. The delivery is the point of it, and the building is where the boxes happen to be packed.

Pastor's notes: " Honestly, I can't take credit for it. It was a collaborative church effort. Some people just think that church is a place just to worship. But Concord has some people in it that worship by serving their neighbors; Solo Faith Church is that kind of church."

How Far the Route Goes Next

Organizers plan to expand the program. Because local sponsors fund it, how far the route reaches next year is a direct function of how many sponsors come on board this year. The church's working figure is that ten dollars covers one household delivery, which makes sponsorship unusually easy to picture: a sponsor is not funding an abstraction, they are funding a specific box arriving at a specific door.

Requests go through Solo Faith Church online, with no paperwork and no income test. If you are calling on behalf of an older neighbor or a relative who would not ask for themselves, that is welcome too. Families who need prayer as much as groceries can also send a prayer request to the church.

Solo Faith Church highlights this part of the program because a senior who cannot reach a pantry is not a figure in a county report. She is someone's mother, two streets over, who has been eating less this week than last. Cabarrus County has neighbors in that position right now, and a congregation that can drive to them has no good reason not to.
